Liverpool Football Club was established after a dispute between the management of Everton FC, club president and Anfield owner John Holding. After eight years on the field, Everton moved to Goodison Park in 1892 and John Holding founded Liverpool FC to play at Anfield. The club was initially called "Everton F.C. and Athletic Grounds Ltd", or Everton Athletic for short. The club's name was changed to Liverpool F.C. after the Football Association refused to recognize the name Everton. The team won the Lancashire League in its first season, and joined the Football League Second Division in the 1893–94 season. After finishing the season in first place, the club moved to the First Division, which it won in 1901 and again in 1906.

Liverpool reached the FA Cup Final for the first time in 1914, losing 1-0 to Burnley FC. Liverpool won the League Championship consecutively in 1922 and 1923, but did not win any further until the 1946-47 season, when the club won the First Division Championship for the fifth time under former West Ham United player George Kay. Liverpool suffered a second loss in the FA Cup Final in 1950 from Arsenal. The club was relegated to the second division in the 1953-54 season. Shortly after Liverpool lost to non-league club Worcester City in the FA Cup, Bill Shankly was appointed as coach. Upon his arrival, he released 24 players and transformed a boot storage room at Anfield into a room where coaches would meet and discuss strategy. Here Shankly began meeting with other 'shoe room' members Joe Fagan, Robin Bennett and Bob Paisley to form the squad.

The club was promoted to the first division again in 1962 and won it in 1964, for the first time in 17 years. In 1965, the club won the FA Cup for the first time. In 1966, the club won the First Division but lost to Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Final. Liverpool won the League and UEFA Cup in the 1972–73 season, and the FA Cup the following season. After that, Shankly retired and was replaced by his assistant Bob Paisley. In 1976, Benzi's second season as coach, Liverpool won the League and European Cup double again. In the following season, the club maintained the League and won the European Cup for the first time, but lost in the 1977 FA Cup Final. Liverpool retained the European Cup in 1978 and the First Division in 1979. During Paisley's ninth season as coach, Liverpool won 21 trophies, including 3 cups. Europe, the UEFA Cup, six league titles, and three consecutive League Cups. The only domestic tournament he hasn't won is the FA Cup.

Paisley retired in 1983 and was replaced by his assistant, Joe Fagan. Liverpool won the League, League Cup and European Cup in Fagan's first season, becoming the first English club to win three trophies in one season. Liverpool reached the European Cup final again in 1985, against Juventus at Heysel Stadium. Before the start of the match, Liverpool fans broke the fence separating the fans of the two clubs, and accused the Juventus fans. The weight of the people caused the wall to collapse, killing 39 of the crowd, mostly Italians. The incident became known as the Heysel Stadium disaster. The match was played despite the protests of both coaches, Liverpool losing 1-0. As a result of the incident, English clubs were denied European participation for five years, Liverpool received a ten-year ban, but it was later reduced to six years. Fourteen Liverpool fans have been convicted of manslaughter.

Fagan announced his retirement shortly before the disaster and appointed Kenny Dalglish as player and coach. During this period, the team won three league titles and two FA Cups, including the FA Cup and League Cup double in the 1985–86 season. The Hillsborough disaster overshadowed Liverpool's success, in the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest on 15 April 1989, hundreds of Liverpool fans were crushed on the fence surrounding the stadium. Ninety-four people died that day, the ninety-fifth victim died in hospital of his injuries four days later, and the ninety-sixth victim died nearly four years later, without regaining consciousness. After the Hillsborough disaster there was a government review of stadium safety. Taylor's report resulting from the review paved the way for legislation requiring all first-division teams to have one seat in their stadiums. The report indicated that the main cause of the disaster was overcrowding resulting from the failure of police control.

Liverpool were at the end of the tightest league season in the league, the 1988–89 season. Liverpool finished the season equal with Arsenal on points and goal difference, but lost the title with total goals scored when Arsenal scored the last goal in the last minute of the season.

Dalglish indicated that the Hillsborough disaster and its repercussions were the reason for his resignation in 1991, and he was replaced by former player Graeme Souness. Under his leadership, Liverpool won the 1992 FA Cup Final, but the team's performance in the league declined, as it finished sixth in successive times, which caused him to be sacked in 1994. Roy Evans replaced Souness, and Liverpool won the League Cup final in 1995. While they competed for the The league title under Evans, third place is the team's best in 1996 and 1998, and Gerard Houllier was appointed as assistant coach, becoming coach in November 1998 after Evans resigned. In 2001, Houllier's second full season, Liverpool won the treble: the FA Cup, the League Cup and the FA Cup. Houllier underwent heart surgery during the 2001–02 season and Liverpool finished second in the league behind Arsenal. The team won the League Cup in 2003, but failed to contend for the title in the following two seasons.

Ian St. John states in his autobiography:

He [Shankley] thought the colors had a psychological effect—red a symbol of danger, red a symbol of strength. He came to the locker room one day and threw red shorts at Ronnie Yates. "Put those shorts on, let's see what you look like," he said. "Oh my God, Ronnie, you look amazing, scary, you look like you're 7 feet tall." And I suggested, "Why don't we finish it?", "Why don't we wear red stockings? Let's go full red." Shankly agreed and was born into an iconic outfit.

uniforms

For most of Liverpool's history, the club's primary color was all-red, but when the club was founded, its uniform was similar to that of Everton FC. Where he used the white and blue shirt until 1894, when the club adopted the red color. The city's symbol, the liver bird, was adopted as the club's crest in 1901, although it was not worn on the shirt until 1955. Liverpool continued to use red shirts and white shorts until 1964, when coach Bill Shankly decided to change it to the full red dress. Where Liverpool played for the first time, in full red, against Anderlecht FC.

The yellow or white shirt and black shorts were often Liverpool's second jersey, but there were some exceptions. Where the full gray dress was used in 1987, and was used until the 1991-92 season, the club's centenary season, after which it was replaced by the green shirt and white shorts. There are also several colors used in the 1990s, including gold and navy, bright yellow, black and gray, and ecru, the club alternated between yellow and white until the 2008–09 season, when the gray was brought back. The third uniform is used in European matches, in the event that the second reserve outfit conflicts with the first dress of the host team, and if it occurs, it often occurs in European competitions. Nike has been responsible for designing the current dress since the start of the 2020-21 season. Other companies that designed the team's kit were Umbro until 1985, when it was replaced by Adidas, which designed the team kit until 1996. Then came Reebok, which designed the team kit for ten years until 2006, before adidas returned in 2006 and into 2012.

Logo

Liverpool is the first English professional football team to have the club's sponsor logo on its shirt, after the club's management agreed with Hitachi in 1979. Since then, the club has sponsored several international companies such as Crown Paints, Kandy, Carlsberg and Standard Chartered. The partnership with Carlsberg, signed in 1992, is the longest in English football history. It lasted until the 2011-2012 season, ending Carlsberg's 30-year partnership with Liverpool FC, after Standard Chartered became the team's official sponsor.

The team crest is based on the city crest, the liver bird, which was previously placed inside a shield. But in 1992, in order to celebrate the club's centenary, a new logo was designed for the team, after it included the Shankly Gate. The following year, two flames were added to either side of the emblem to represent the Hillsborough Disaster Memorial outside Anfield Road, an eternal flame in memory of those who perished in the disaster. In 2012, in the first Warriors Sports design, the shield and gate were removed, recreating the logo used in the 1970s. The two flames were moved to the back of the shirt collar to surround the number 96, which represents the number of Hillsborough casualties.
