Iran national football team



The Iran national football team is the official representative of Iran in the sport of football. The Iranian Football Association was founded in 1920, and joined FIFA in 1945. Iran qualified for the finals after easily climbing to the top of its group in the preliminary qualifications. But it came behind Japan in the second group in the final qualifiers by two points.


The Iranian national football team participated five times in the FIFA World Cup Finals. Iran's first international match was in 1941 against Afghanistan and ended in a 0-0 draw, and its biggest victory was in 2000 against Guam with a score of 19-0, and the harshest loss in 1950 was at the hands of Turkey with a score of 1-6. Iran reached the Asian Cup finals 14 times and won Cup in 1968, 1972, and 1976.


In Iran there is Azadi Stadium, which means freedom, which was built in the seventies and has a capacity of more than 100,000 spectators. Iran's first victory in the FIFA World Cup was in 1998 against the United States national football team 2-1. That match was characterized by a high spirit of sportsmanship by both teams despite the tension in the political relations between the two countries.
