And with that has come the painful inevitability that some of the biggest stars in the game would get injured in the run in and simply wouldn’t be fit for the tournament.

That, sadly, has become a reality for many stars who will have to watch their beloved nations tussle it out from afar while they heal from their various ailments.


 Now, perhaps the biggest casualty so far has dropped, with Senegalese superstar Sadio Mane confirmed to be out of the World Cup.


Mane, who finished second in the running for the Ballon d’Or this year, limped out of Bayern Munich’s latest clash with Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga.

 Sadio Mané (French: Sadio Mané; born April 10, 1992) is a Senegalese footballer who plays as a winger for Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga and the Senegal national team. Known for his good finishing, dribbling and speed, Mane is considered one of the best strikers in the world.


Mane started his professional career with Metz in Ligue 2 at the age of 19, but left after a single season to join Austrian Red Bull Salzburg in 2012 for a transfer fee of 4 million euros, winning the league and domestic cup titles in the 2013-14 season. Later that summer, Mane moved to Southampton for a club record transfer fee of £11.8 million. There, he set a new Premier League record by scoring for the fastest hat-trick, notching the hat-trick in 176 seconds in a 6–1 win over Aston Villa in 2015.


He signed with Liverpool in 2016 for a transfer fee of £34m. He helped the club reach three Champions League finals in 2018, 2019 and 2022, and won the title in 2019. He also achieved the league's top scorer title in the 2018–19 season. In the same year, he placed fourth in the Ballon d'Or and fifth in the FIFA World Player of the Year award. Next, Mane helped end Liverpool's 30-year absence from the league title by winning the Premier League for the 2019–20 season.


At the international level, Mane scored 33 goals in 91 matches with his country, Senegal, since his first participation in 2012, and he is the team's historical scorer, and the third in terms of the number of matches. He represented Senegal at the 2012 Olympics, as well as the 2015 and 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. In the 2019 edition, Mane helped Senegal reach second place, and a year later he was named African Player of the Year. He also represented his country in the 2018 World Cup, in his second national team participation in the history of the competition.



Beginnings

Born in Sedio, Senegal, Mane started his career at a local academy in Senegal.


He started his professional career with Metz club on January 14, 2012, after entering the match as a substitute for Kevin Diaz in the 75th minute and losing the match 1–0 against Bastia in the French second division. He played with Metz club in his first season 19 matches, 12 of them started as a starter and scored one goal against Guangon FC. Metz that season was relegated to the National Division.



On August 31, 2012, Mane moved to Red Bull Salzburg to be the third most expensive sold player in the history of the Metz club. The transfer was estimated at 4 million euros.


He scored his first hat-trick with the club on October 31 in the cup competition.


He scored his first hat-trick in the Austrian league on October 27, 2013 against Grudig FC. He scored another hat-trick on May 7, 2014, when he defeated Horn Club 7–0 in the cup semi-finals.


Sadio Mane finished the season with his club by achieving the domestic double. At the end of August 2014, Mane insisted on leaving the club by not attending training and missing the crucial match for his club, which qualified for the Champions League.


Southampton

2016–17 season

On 28 June 2016, Mane joined Liverpool FC for £34 million on a five-year contract. His transfer at this price made him the most expensive African player transfer in history at the time.

In the first match of the new season, on August 12, 2017, away to Watford, Mane scored Liverpool's first goal of the season in a 3–3 draw. He was named Premier League Player of the Month after scoring a goal in each of the Reds' three matches in August. On 9 September 2017, he received a direct red card in the first half of the 5–0 loss to Manchester City after raising his foot and colliding with City goalkeeper Ederson, which led to a three-match ban. Mane, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho formed a terrifying attacking quartet called "Fab Four" and "Fab Three" after the latter moved to Barcelona in the middle of the season.


On February 14, 2018, Mane scored his first hat-trick for Liverpool in the 5–0 win over FC Porto in the round of 16 of the 2017–18 UEFA Champions League. With his goal in the 3–0 win against Bournemouth on 14 April, he surpassed Demba Ba's record of 43 Premier League goals to become the Senegalese player with the most goals in Premier League history.


On 26 May, during the 2018 UEFA Champions League Final against Real Madrid, Mane scored the equalizer for Liverpool in a 3–1 defeat. Thus, he became the first Senegalese player to score in the Champions League final. His goal in the final was his tenth of the season, making Liverpool the first team in history to score three of its players 10 goals in one season of the Champions League. 2018–19 season

On November 22, 2018, Mane renewed his contract with Liverpool. On March 10, 2019, Mane scored two goals in a 4–2 win over Burnley, and his second goal was his 50th official goal for Liverpool. His goals also made him the fifth Liverpool player to score in six consecutive Premier League matches after Michael Owen, Fernando Torres, Luis Suarez and Mohamed Salah. Three days later, he scored two more goals in the 3–1 win over Bayern Munich to help Liverpool qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals. In doing so, he became the club's all-time leading scorer in away matches with seven goals. During the next Liverpool match, he broke another record to become the most Senegalese player to score the most goals in a Premier League season, having scored his 17th goal of the season in a 2–1 win over Fulham. On 20 April, he was one of six players nominated for the England Player of the Year award alongside teammate Virgil van Dijk. He was also named to this year's Premier League Team of the Season alongside his Liverpool teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson and Van Dyck.


In the last round of the league, Mane scored two goals in a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. It made him win the Golden Boot award in the Premier League with 22 goals per season, jointly with teammate Mohamed Salah and Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. On 1 June, Mane scored an early penalty kick for Liverpool in the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final against Tottenham Hotspur, just 24 seconds into the match; Salah paid it after that and opened the scoring. Liverpool won the final 2–0 to win the 2018–19 UEFA Champions League.


On August 14, 2019, Mane scored two goals in the 2019 European Super Cup against Chelsea in the match that Liverpool won 5–4 on penalties after the match ended in a 2–2 draw in the original and overtime periods. Mane was chosen as the man of the match.


Exactly one month later, he scored twice in a 3–1 win over Newcastle United and expanded his unbeaten run for Liverpool at Anfield to 50, a league record for any player at a given stadium. In his 100th Premier League appearance for Liverpool on 5 October, Mane scored his 50th league goal for the club in a 2–1 win over Leicester City.


On October 21, Mane was named to the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d'Or 2019. On December 2, Mane finished fourth in the award, behind Lionel Messi and his Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo respectively. Two days later, he scored a goal and assisted two more, as Liverpool beat Everton 5–2 in the Merseyside derby to extend the team's unbeaten football range to 32 consecutive games, a new club record. Later that month, Liverpool won the 2019 Club World Cup, Mane assisting Firmino's only goal in the final against Flamengo.


On January 7, 2020, Mane was named the African Footballer of the Year. He became the second Senegalese to achieve this award after El Hadj Diouf.


On February 24, Mane scored a 3–2 home win against West Ham United in the Premier League as Liverpool scored 21 consecutive home wins, a league record shared with Bill Shankly's Liverpool team in 1972, and made them This fo, also set the record for consecutive victories in the English Premier League with 18 wins in a row. On July 5, in the Round of 16, Mane scored the only goal of the match against Uganda. Mane finished the tournament as runner-up after losing in the final 1–0 to Algeria. Despite finishing the competition as a runner-up, Mane was named to the team of the tournament.

Mane continued his football career even though his father forbade him from playing sports as a child.
