Jawan (film)


Jawan (transl. Soldier) is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language action thriller film co-written and directed by Atlee, in his first Hindi film.[3] It is produced by Gauri Khan and Gaurav Verma under Red Chillies Entertainment. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role, alongside Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Deepika Padukone (billed as a special appearance), Priyamani and Sanya Malhotra.

Principal photography commenced in September 2021 with filming taking place in Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Rajasthan and Aurangabad. The film's soundtrack and background score were composed by Anirudh Ravichander, with cinematography by G. K. Vishnu and editing by Ruben.

Jawan was initially planned for release on 2 June 2023, but was postponed due to unfinished post-production work.[4] It is now scheduled for a theatrical release on 7 September 2023 in standard, IMAX, 4DX and other premium formats, coinciding with Janmashtami.

Synopsis
Vikram Rathore is a former soldier who is determined to make amends for his past, where he also leads a team of six skilled women in a series of heists across the country and hijacks the Mumbai Metro. Vikram learns that his long-lost son Azad Rathore is an honest police officer who is being targeted by his nemesis Kalee, the fourth largest arms dealer in the world. Vikram embarks on a mission to obliterate Kalee and also presents the government with a set of demands, thus setting the stage for an electrifying and high-stakes showdown.[5]

Production
Development
In late 2019, it was rumoured that Shah Rukh Khan would team up with Tamil film director Atlee.[14] Atlee confirmed the project while promoting Bigil.[15] In May 2021, it was reported that the filming would commence soon.[16] The film is produced by Gauri Khan under Red Chillies Entertainment, while Gaurav Verma serves as a co-producer.[17] The company made a public announcement on 3 June 2022, confirming the project.[18] The film is being made on a budget of ₹300 crore.[2]

Atlee co-wrote the film's script along with S. Ramana Girivasan, in his fourth consecutive collaboration with the director.[19] Sumit Arora contributed the dialogues.[20] Atlee further retained most of his norm technicians including cinematographer G. K. Vishnu, editor Ruben, art director T. Muthuraj and stunt director Anal Arasu.[21] Spiro Razatos,[22] Craig Macrae,[23] Yannick Ben,[24] Kecha Khamphakdee[25] and Sunil Rodrigues also were hired as stunt directors.[26][27] Dance choreographers of the film includes Farah Khan, Vaibhavi Merchant, Shobi and Lalitha.[28]

Casting

Mukesh Chhabra was the casting director.[29] Khan was reported to play a dual role, as father and son, and would be seen in six different looks.[30] Nayanthara was finalised as the female lead opposite Khan, thus marking her Hindi cinema debut.[31] Priyamani, Sunil Grover, Sanya Malhotra and Yogi Babu later joined the cast. Reuniting with Khan after a decade, Babu last acted opposite Khan in Chennai Express (2013).[32] Rana Daggubati was offered the antagonist role but declined citing health issues and thus the role went to Vijay Sethupathi.[33] Deepika Padukone joined the cast in August 2022 in Chennai to shoot her special appearance.[34] In September 2022, Vijay was confirmed to be making a cameo in the film.[35] In March 2023, Sanjay Dutt joined the cast to shoot for a cameo during an action scene.[36]



Principal photography commenced in September 2021 in Pune.[37] Shah Rukh Khan and Nayanthara joined the 10–days shoot.[38] It is the first film to be shot at Pune Metro.[39] Khan resumed the shoot in June 2022 in Hyderabad.[40] Nayanthara joined the Mumbai schedule on 26 June 2022, after her marriage.[41] Some family sequences were taken in this schedule.[42]

In August, the next schedule started in Chennai, where Deepika Padukone shot her cameo part.[43][44] Later Vijay Sethupathi joined the shoot. Some action sequences between Khan and Sethupathi were taken in this schedule.[45][46] The song "Zinda Banda" was shot during this schedule, in jail.[47] The song, which shot for 5 days included 1000 dancers, and was choreographed by Shobi Paulraj.[48] The song was also reshot and added in the Tamil version as "Vandha Edam" and in the Telugu version as "Dhumme Dhulipelaa".[49] A month long Chennai schedule was wrapped on 7 October.[50][51]

The next schedule was held in Rajasthan, in October.[52] Khan and Nayanthara joined this 20–day schedule.[53] Next schedule was held in February 2023,[54] where Khan shot some chase scenes.[55] Sanjay Dutt joined the shoot on 20 March 2023,[56] to shoot an action-packed cameo.[57] In April 2023, a song titled "Chaleya" featuring Khan and Nayanthara was shot at Mumbai and Bandra–Worli Sea Link.[58] Later the same month, a song featuring Khan and Deepika Padukone, for her cameo appearance was shot at Film City, Mumbai.[59] Both the songs were choreographed by Farah Khan.[60] In mid July, song titled "Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya" featuring Khan and Nayanthara, choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant was shot at the Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai.[61][62]

Post-production
Post-production for the film began by January 2023 and went on for six months as the film involves extensive computer graphics and visual effects.[63] Editing was handled by Ruben.[64] The VFX work of the film is done by Red Chillies VFX.[65] Harry Hingorani served as the visual effects supervisor with Keitan Yadav as the VFX producer of the film.[66] In April, the company hired visual effects technicians to the team.[67] Ken Metzker of Red Chillies Color did the colouring for the film.[68] Kunal Rajan served as the sound designer.[69]

The final copy of the film was ready by early August 2023, and was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) that month. On 22 August 2023, the film received a U/A certificate from the Censor Board, with a finalised runtime of 169 minutes.[70]


Music



The soundtrack is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, who would mark his debut as a solo composer in Bollywood, previously having composed a song for David and the background score of Jersey.[71] Initially, A. R. Rahman was reportedly approached by director Atlee to compose for the film.[72] Rahman subsequently declined the offer for reasons unknown, and Anirudh was chosen to compose for the film.[73] The music rights were bagged by T-Series for ₹36 crore,[74] which was a record price for a Hindi album.[75]

The track "Jawan Prevue Theme", featured in the two-minute promo video, was released on 10 July 2023.[76] It had rap written and performed by Raja Kumari, with Anirudh and BNiznik performing.[77] The first single titled "Zinda Banda" was released on 31 July 2023.[78] It garnered over 46 million views within 24 hours, setting an all-time record for most viewed Indian song in 24 hours.[79] The second single titled "Chaleya" was released on 14 August 2023.[80] The third single titled "Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya" was released on 29 August 2023.[81] It garnered over 53 million views within 24 hours, becoming most viewed Indian song in 24 hours, surpassing record held by "Zinda Banda".[82] The film's grand audio launch was held on 30 August 2023 at Sri Sai Ram Engineering College, Chennai.[83][84] On 31 August 2023, an Arabic version of the song "Chaleya" was released under the title "Chaleya Arabic" at an event held at the Burj Khalifa.[85]
